- 14c., "part for whole or vice versa," from M.L. synodoche, from L.L. synecdoche, from Gk. synekdokhe, from synekdekhesthai "supply a thought or word, take with something else," from syn- "with" + ek "out" + dekhesthai "to receive," related to dokein "seem good."
